About the Event

Obituary of The Late Martha Matshidiso Nkoana

Martha was born on the 3rd of March 1941 in Alexandra. She attended Methodist Primary School and proceeded Alexandra High School. After completing her JC, she briefly worked at Waterval Hospital, then proceeded to train as a nurse at Baragwanath Nursing College. She qualified as a professional nurse in 1963. She later qualified in midwifery and worked as a midwife in 1967 for various community health care centers in Soweto. Later she specialized in Pediatrics and then became one of the first to qualify as a tutor in Primary Health Care and worked for Chris Hani Baragwanath Nursing College as PHC Tutor. She graduated in BCur (Degree in Nursing Science) in 1986. She completed a graduate Diploma in Nursing Education in 1990. She later completed her training in IMCI when it was first introduced in different health care institutions in South Africa.

After retirement, she joined PRHU as a study coordinator. Then proceeded to work for Anova Health Institute until November 2019. She fell ill and discovered that she contracted Covid-19 on the Wednesday the 5th of May 2021.

She was admitted to hospital on the 10th of May and met her untimely death on the 13th of May 2021.

She was a dedicated member of the St Hilda’s Anglican Church community and was a member of the Mother’s Union.

She was married to Phathi Dusty Nkoana for over 50 years until his death in 2010. She was blessed with 3 children, the late Gerry, Nanana and Makgati. She was a doting grandmother and was blessed with 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Her love for her siblings remains unmatched. His Grace Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, Mathapelo India, and Matapala Mothoa have lost an amazing older sister. Her nephews and nieces, Lerato, Steven, Tladi, Thomas, Nyakallo, Paballo, Thabo and Moroka held a special place in her heart.

The nursing fraternity, the Anglican church, the Makgoba and Nkoana Families, the Soweto community, her friends, neighbors have lost a great stalwart.
